On the morning of the 26th April 2016, the Australian Government publicly announced that, subject to further discussions on commercial matters, DCNS was selected as the preferred international partner for the design of the 12 Future Submarines.

The Turnbull Government stated that, "The next generation of submarines for Australia will be constructed at the Adelaide shipyard, securing thousands of jobs and ensuring the project will play a key part in the transition of [Australia's] economy." ¹
