Dr Gumley's previous roles include his appointment as the inaugural CEO of the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO), where he guided the organisation in its transition to an Australian Government Prescribed Agency on 1st July 2005, after having been CEO of the Australian Submarine Corporation from 2002-2004. Prior to this, Dr Gumley was the Vice President at Boeing in Seattle, CEO of aviation software supplier, The Preston Group, and CEO of the entrepreneurial Global Lighting Technologies Group. 

In 2010, Dr Gumley was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for "service to public sector management, particularly through leadership of the DMO, and the development and implementation of significant reforms n procurement and sustainment of military equipment." In 2006 Dr Gumley was named as one of the 100 most influential engineers in Australia by the Institution of Engineers Australia.

Dr Gumley holds a Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Tasmania and was elected as a Rhodes scholar. He has also been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from St Catherine's College, Oxford University and has an MBA from the University of Tasmania.
